Safer Community Plan

North Cowichan is amending its zoning bylaw to comply with the new requirements of the Local Government Act in respect of small-scale multi-unit housing. North Cowichan is required to adopt the zoning amendment by June 30, 2024. There are additional steps and deadlines that the Municipality must meet to comply with the new legislation. Provincial Housing Changes (Bill 44)

North Cowichan and the City of Duncan are creating a new Safer Community Plan and we want to hear from people who are most impacted by public disorder related to homelessness, addictions, or mental health in the corridor area. A survey is now open.

North Cowichan&rsquo;s recreation department is conducting a Youth Services Review to better understand youth needs in the community. The review will identify gaps and opportunities in youth services, and, ultimately, inform an evidence-based approach for the planning and implementation of future youth services.We want to hear from youth and people who provide youth supports or services to help develop future strategies aligned with the genuine needs and aspirations of North Cowichan&#39;s youth. This project is a continuation of existing strategies to address youth needs in the community, including targeted outreach programs in Crofton and Chemainus and school-based lunch hour initiatives.During May and June 2024, we sought feedback through a survey and open house.<ul><li>The survey is now closed. Thank you to everyone who attended the open house and provided input through the survey. </li><li>There were up to $600 in prizes to be won by eligible youth participants - winners will be contacted soon. </li></ul><h3>Next steps</h3><ul type="disc"><li>Reporting will take place over the summer. Please stay tuned for updates and outcomes from the upcoming Youth Services Review Report.</li></ul>

Youth Services Review

North Cowichan is launching a process to make its plans, operations, and infrastructure more resilient to climate hazards. We are developing a Climate Adaptation Strategy that will help North Cowichan respond to the effects of extreme weather on our local infrastructure, natural environment, economy, and community well-being.Extreme weather events are increasing in intensity and frequency in our region. North Cowichan has a diverse geography, including over 40 kilometers of coastline, rivers, creeks and lakes, and a mix of rural and urban lands. The first phase of this project will identify the existing risks and vulnerabilities in our boundaries, through a &lsquo;risk and vulnerability assessment.&rsquo;This project will build off <a href="https://www.cvrd.ca/2101/Climate-Change">recent work completed by the Cowichan Valley Regional District</a>. North Cowichan&rsquo;s Climate Adaptation Strategy will dive into our local context and develop actions related to our municipal operations that will address local risks and identify opportunities to enhance community preparedness.We want to hear from youThank you to all who participated in the survey!
